Berkeley Writing Anthology

200-page digital anthology of student writing from the 2020-21 Art of Writing program at UC Berkeley, which celebrates writing as a teachabale art. During the pandemic, the annual anthology shifted to a digital format, but the department still wanted to create a memento that felt meaningful and discrete. With the look of a vintage leather-bound book and hand-drawn doodles throughout, the digital artifact maintains elements — and the significance of — a printed piece. And yet, the trompe-l'œil design is inherently playful since it is, of course, just a PDF. The student writing was so varied in subject — from pieces on racial injustice to movie reviews of Singin’ in the Rain — that a design which felt both serious and irreverent felt exactly right.
